Fall Watercolor Retreat at the Requa Inn
Imagine This ….
You arrive to the smell of old wood and river air at a historic 1914 inn perched above the Klamath River — less than a mile from where the river meets the sea, in the middle of Redwood National Park, and at the heart of Yurok Country. Since the beginning of time, the Yurok people have had a village at Requa (pronounced Rek-wah), and that sense of place — ancient, unhurried, deeply alive — settles over you the moment you step out of your car.
By evening you're sharing a delicious dinner of locally-sourced food with a small group of fellow artists — strangers who will feel like friends by the time you leave. And by being here, you're helping fund free art programs for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and homelessness through Art for the Heart.
Each morning begins with a leisurely breakfast before you settle in to paint. You'll learn watercolor techniques from a gifted Humboldt County artist, explore color and composition, and assemble a landscape collage that's entirely your own. There's something about painting in a place this beautiful that unlocks something — the light through the redwoods, the movement of the river, the way the mist hangs in the morning. It gets into your work.
In between sessions you have time to wander — down to the beach where the river meets the sea, along the river trail, or with your group to the Klamath Overlook to watch the sun melt into the Pacific. Your final morning ends with a plein air session on the lawn overlooking the river — brush in hand, painting the landscape that's been inspiring you all weekend.
You go home with finished artwork, new friends, and a few days of redwood magic in your bones.
No experience necessary. All levels welcome.
Your Instructor — Maureen McGarry
Maureen McGarry has spent decades painting the landscapes of Northern California, always returning to watercolor for what she calls its closeness to nature — pure pigments, water as solvent, and an honesty that other mediums can't quite match. She chose to live in Humboldt County for its breathtaking natural environment, and that sense of wonder has never left her work.
A former Artist-in-Residence with the Redwood Parks Conservancy, Maureen knows this landscape intimately — and knows how to help others see it through an artist's eye.
Teaching is equally central to her life. She believes that finding a way to express the vision inside each of us is what makes us whole, and she has spent her career helping people of all ages and experience levels find their muse. At this retreat she brings that philosophy to one of the most inspiring landscapes in California.
You couldn't ask for a better guide — or a better place to paint. https://maureenmcgarry.com/
